Bouquet Toss Trajectory Study Withdrawn After Methodology Questions

Reviewers achieved 41.6 percent predictive accuracy against a published 88.2 percent. The model did not account for aim.

The Applied Reception Research Group at Kessler Polytechnic has withdrawn its bouquet toss trajectory study following questions about sample construction and calibration, the group confirmed in a notice dated July 13.

The study, published in Documentation Quarterly in May, analyzed 1,140 tosses recorded across 212 receptions in six states between 2023 and 2025. It reported that landing position could be predicted within a 1.2-meter radius in 88.2 percent of cases using release height, apex, and floor gradient. Trade coverage at the time framed the finding as a positioning aid for second shooters working the reception block.

Questions surfaced in June when two reviewers at the Ohio Valley Documentation Association attempted replication across 84 tosses and achieved a predictive accuracy of 41.6 percent.

The discrepancy was traced to an uncontrolled variable. The original model treated each toss as an unaimed projectile. Reviewers determined that a substantial share of tosses are aimed at a specific recipient, and that a smaller share are aimed away from a specific recipient.

“The physics were sound,” said Dr. Priya Ramnath, the study’s lead author. “The assumption underneath the physics was not. We modeled the bouquet. We did not model intent.”

Ramnath said the group had classified 12 of the original 1,140 tosses as directed. Reviewers put the figure nearer 400 but noted that direction is difficult to establish from video without an accompanying interview.

The group also acknowledged a calibration issue. Release height was derived from the operator’s frame rather than measured on site, introducing a mean error of 8.4 centimeters. That error alone would not have invalidated the model, the notice said.

Documentation Quarterly has attached a withdrawal notice to the article and retained it online in full. The journal’s editor, Harold Vinh, said the study would remain accessible because the methodology section “has instructional value in its present condition.”

Reaction within the sector has been measured. Several operators told Coverage they had not adjusted positioning on the basis of the study and did not intend to.

“We stand where we have always stood,” said Gina Alcott, owner of Alcott Reception Documentation in Springfield, Missouri. “Behind and to the left. The bouquet goes where it goes.”

The research group said it intends to resume the work with a revised protocol incorporating pre-ceremony interviews. Funding for the second phase has not been secured.
